about tom.
Since debuting as the creative force behind Farewell Friend, Tom Troyer has earned recognition as a skilled songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, celebrated for his deeply introspective lyrics and lush, emotionally charged soundscapes. From crafting albums like the conceptual Lineage to the hauntingly beautiful The Silent Years., Troyer has built a reputation for blending poetic storytelling with innovative production, drawing comparisons to The National, Wilco, and Sufjan Stevens. Beyond his own projects, he has contributed to over 25 albums as an engineer and producer, helping shape the sound of North Carolina’s thriving music scene through his studio, Black Rabbit Audio.
“The goal with my music is always to connect on a deeply human level—transforming raw emotion into something tangible and resonant,” Troyer says of his work, including The Silent Years, a heart-wrenching exploration of loss, resilience, and the bond between a mother and son. “Each song feels like an intimate conversation, but also like it’s part of something bigger—something that reaches beyond me.”
Born and raised in the cornfields of Indiana and now based in Greensboro, North Carolina, Troyer discovered his passion for songwriting as a child and has spent his life honing his craft. Over the years, he’s developed a distinctive approach to both writing and production, marked by an educator’s thoughtfulness and a collaborative spirit. Whether performing as Farewell Friend, recording other artists, or contributing to live performances with artists and bands like Laura Jane Vincent and Viva La Muerte, Troyer has emerged as a dynamic figure in contemporary folk and indie music.
A self-described musical storyteller, Troyer’s work is known for its ability to bridge the deeply personal and the universally relatable. With albums like [Samson] and Glenwood and Gomorrah, he’s explored themes ranging from identity to gentrification, earning praise for his uncanny ability to weave complex narratives into mesmerizing songs. The Silent Years takes that artistry to new heights, offering listeners a poignant, multi-layered experience that defies genre boundaries and lingers long after the final note.
In addition to his work as an artist, Troyer’s commitment to fostering creativity extends to Black Rabbit Audio, where he helps musicians of all genres bring their visions to life. “It’s about creating a space where ideas can thrive,” he says. “Whether it’s my music or someone else’s, the goal is always to tell a story that resonates and feels true.”
Looking ahead, Tom Troyer continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with Farewell Friend, inviting audiences on a musical journey filled with vulnerability, depth, and hope.

In the summer of 2014 seven friends went on the adventure of a lifetime leaving their friend Kevan's wheelchair behind. Together, they explored Europe, and spent three weeks exploring places commonly deemed *inaccessible*. They danced in the streets of Paris, hiked through the English countryside, and scaled the monastic island of Skellig Michael, off the coast of Ireland. Around every corner, faced with the wonderful reality that with courage and creativity, the world becomes accessible.
During the trip, Tom purchased a guitalele while in France and began composing and recording on location. His songs became the backdrop to the trip and add a unique creative intimacy to the film.
